Design a Creative Homepage 

While we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, many of us often do. Your channel’s homepage is the first thing your viewers see; make it count. You want to give them a reason to watch your videos, and the homepage is where you can capture their attention with creative design and appealing content. 

Your YouTube channel’s homepage should consist of five important elements:

  • Profile picture. This is the icon that shows up when you leave a comment anywhere or wherever you are when you’re within the YouTube universe. It should be easy to see and understand; it’s a small space to make a big impact. A nice image of your face is always a crowd-pleaser.

Exact-Match Anchor Text 

These links exactly match the keyword target of the page you’re linking to.

For example: Find out more about the rules of link building. 

Which would then link to a page about link building. 

Generic Anchor Text

This is commonly used when a preceding statement discusses a topic, followed by something like, “click here” or “find out more”, etc.

For example: You hear a lot about how H1 tags can affect your SEO. 

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, using generic anchor text provides no details to Google about where the page is going to land, but it may be a more active way to get your reader to participate.

Related Anchor Text

This is done when you use keyword variations in your link and it will help Google better understand what your linked-to page(s) are about. It also creates a more natural, conversational, less-spammy tone. 

If used the keywords “website traffic” several times within your content, you may want to change it up some.

For example: Getting people to visit your website has never been easier. 

Naked Link Anchor Text

When a plain URL is used as the link text, it’s a naked link.

You hear a lot about engaging your customer or user and the importance of this as a marketing technique. The better your engagement, the better your sales. However, the exact meaning of engagement is a bit convoluted, and measuring its success proves difficult, if not impossible. 

So does engagement really play a role in your marketing strategy? Today we’re going to try to wrap our heads around it. 

What is Engagement?

When your brand is being engaged by your many followers or readers or users, you may feel like you’re nailing your whole engagement project. But what do you consider to be engagement and is that really getting you sales?

The problem is that engaging with your customer means different things to different marketing strategists. Some believe it’s simply getting the attention of your audience and inspiring interaction. Others believe it’s getting brand awareness. And still more base it on how many likes they receive.  

The real issue is that brand engagement should be intended to drive sales, but along the way, engagement has become more about getting shares or followers, and while that undoubtedly does bring sales in, shares and followers are not the end goal, just the means to the end goal. 

How Do I Know if My Engagement Strategy is Working? 

Herein lies the problem. Sure, if we’re talking about looking at shares and likes and impressions and comments we can see data, numbers that give us reason to believe our engagement strategy is working. 

But, how often have you engaged with a brand just for information and not bought whatever they were selling? Or how many likes have you given a brand that never materialized sales? These are examples of vanity analytics and don’t have anything to do with actual sale metrics. 

The fact is, if we’re discussing engagement’s real purpose, its intent to drive sales, there are no reliable metrics to analyze its effect. 

Don’t get too disappointed though. The social media platforms recognize this problem and are going to adapt. This will come in the form of follow-up questions about ads after they’ve been seen on a feed, tracking page scrolling, and tools specific to the social media platform that will provide data to the brand.

Should I Keep My Engagement Strategy Going? 

Yes. Engagement still works. Likes, shares, comments, vanity engagement, that’s all great for your brand. Getting in front of new and more faces certainly won’t harm you. Just be sure you understand that because a user hearted your picture, doesn’t mean they’ve bought your product- or ever will.

H1 Tags and Search Engine Optimization

H1 (or header) tags are used to indicate the heading or title of an article or page online.  They should offer the reader insight into what a page is about, but they do more than that for your SEO strategy.  

When you see a page or a post, you often see several different sizes of headers, that’s because there are 4 header styles to choose from (h1, h2, h3, h4).  All of these are important to the user experience and impact your SEO.  Today we’re going to tell you why your h1 is the most important. 

What is an H1 Tag? 

The h1 tag is the first thing your reader will notice about your page in most cases.  When it’s used, it offers a different size and/or style of text to ensure it’s impactful and stands out from the rest of the tags and content on the page. 

You will often see other headers throughout the page, those generally represent the points that are made to enforce the reason behind the page and support the h1 tag.  So, if h1 is your page’s title, the h2 will be the main points, and h3 and h4 will be used as sub-points headers.

It’s important to note that there is also a title tag and that’s different from the h1.  Your title tag is what the user sees on the search engine result pages (SERPs), it’s the bolded heading in your snippet, and not seen on your actual page.  That said, your title tag and h1 tag may be the exact same in wording, but the code behind them differs.  The title tag is also important for SEO because it tells the search engines what your page is about.

Why do Search Engines Care About H1 Tags?

Because webpages use crawlers (also called spiders) and not actual humans to “read” the pages found on the internet there needs to be specific code that tells them how to understand each page.  The code is essentially a signal that provides the crawlers intel.  

The H tags are HTML code and when the spiders crawl the page they can read that data and it tells them about the content of the page, providing insight into what your page is about.  This is important because if the crawlers don’t understand your page, they won’t know when to push you on the SERPs.

Helping the crawlers helps your SEO.

User experience is also great for SEO.  When pages are easy to navigate and read, the user likes it, which means the search engines like it.    

How to Best Optimize Your H1 Tag

Now that you have an understanding of what the h1 tag is and its importance to SEO, let’s talk about how you can make it a good one:

  • As stated above, the title tag and h1 tag should be the same or close to the same, Google likes it
  • You should always use your main keywords in your h1 tag and throughout your headers (don’t stuff)
  • Make your headline descriptive, but as short as you can, under 65 characters
  • We mentioned being sure you use the h1, h2, h3, h4 throughout your page, but when doing this, be sure you do it correctly (don’t use the same style throughout the page, keep it in order of importance), your h1 tag is only used once- for the heading
  • Your h1 tag is there to provide information to the user, so be sure whatever you create matches what your users are looking for and provide what they’re expecting in the body

In order to have an excellent SEO campaign, you need a few things that Google loves (other than stellar copy and keywords) and one of those things is excellent link building.  However, through working with our clients, we’ve realized that a lot of businesses don’t really understand much about link building.  

To help with that lack of understanding, today we’re going to run down some of the best rules to follow for a successful link building campaign.  

Best Rules for Link Building 

  • Is the link of value?  What will it do for you?  Is it authoritative (does Google like it)?  You need to have a reason for the link (more traffic, it’s relevant and relatable, etc.) and the link needs to come from a trusted source.
  • Get your details in online local listings (inclusive of a link to your website, of course).
  • When others mention your business, your blog, your products, etc. be sure they’re linking to your website and if they aren’t, just give them the ask, they’ll do it.  
  • Be sure all of your pages are linked so no one is pushing traffic to 404s (dead pages).  It’s easy to redirect by giving the old link a 301 and giving the authority to the new page.
  • Be a stellar business and get stellar attention.  Give to charities?  Host events?  Involved in the community?  These are smart ways to get your link out there.  
  • Give the WWW some super unique, truthful, and interesting content and people will share it, comment on it, review it, and all of that generates more views and more opportunity for links to get out there. This is how to create shareable content.
  • Just ask.  Asking strangers may be hard, generally, no one responds to that, but ask influencers or others with authority that you already know.

Worst Rules for Link Building

  • Buying or selling links is bad unless you’re attaching a no-follow (which does nothing for your link building).
  • Linking wherever you want, whether it’s relative or not.  Only link where it makes sense or you’ll become spam immediately.
  • Leaving comments with your link attached.  Again, spam, unless it’s truly beneficial for the readers.
  • Using tools that create links for you.  These links end up all over the place and Google knows what you’re doing. 
  • Link schemes and link exchanges are a thing of the past.  They corrupt the authority of any website and any link involved.

  • Is my target married, single, with a family?

All of these questions are great for finding out who exactly you want to be selling to, which will help you find out where exactly they are online.

Are they on Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, LinkedIn, YouTube?  Where are they getting their news?  Their music? Their games? What would you do in order to find your service or product?

The reason you want to know this is because of time, energy, and money.  Not every person out there is going to be a smart lead. If you’re a business that caters to working moms, you don’t want frat boys bouncing off your website and diminishing your SEO efforts.  So, don’t put yourself in front of them.  

Find out where your true prospects are and meet them there with the goal of getting the quality leads to your website.  Everyone benefits from this strategy.  

Offer your prospects what they want 

This sounds easy, but sometimes we get so caught up with giving, we give the wrong stuff to the wrong people.  Don’t fall into this trap.

If your audience loves mobster history, give them unique and informative mobster history details.  Maybe through a podcast or a blog or mobster events in the area. But don’t give them generic history details that will have war history buffs headed to your website and leaving immediately because it’s not what they’re looking for.  

Be specific with your offers, your content, your keywords, so you get those prospects that are really going to contribute to your SEO campaign through purchasing, liking, following, sharing, etc.  Create a brand that garners the loyalty you want from the users you want.
